Anja E. Pen: Gene Modification in Honeybee and Pig

PhD defense, Friday 14 September 2018, Anja E. Pen.

Anja E. Pen

During her studies, Anja investigated different ways to genetically modify honeybees and pigs. For the first time, she combined the new CRISPR-Cas9 technique and sperm-mediated gene transfer (SMGT) in her research laboratory to introduce genetic alterations in these animals. This provides new avenues to research the development of the worker and queen castes in honeybees. Using the same techniques Anja aimed to produce human disease models in pigs. Her goal was to establish an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease model in pigs by altering the SOD1 gene.

The PhD degree was completed at the department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
