During her studies, Estrella Elvira-Ramirez researched the role of ethylene receptors in Lotus japonicus during root nodule symbiosis. This symbiosis is established between legume plants and specific soil bacteria. During this interaction, the bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen which is relinquished to the plant metabolism. Estrella Elvira-Ramirez studied what is the role of individual ethylene receptors during the establishment of this association. The new research findings contribute to the understanding of how the root nodule symbiosis is regulated and provide new insights into involvement of an ethylene receptor as a novel regulator needed to reach an optimal interaction.

The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG), Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
