Fang Fang: Analysis of microRNAs in honey bee - further understanding of caste determination

PhD defence, Friday 5 January 2018, PhD student Fang Fang

Fang Fang

During her PhD project, Fang Fang studied the effects of microRNAs on the development of honey bees. Characterization of miRNA profiles in the early larval tissue and royal jelly provided the potential functions of highly expressed microRNAs in the larval development and differentiation in the honey bees. Fang Fang achieved to find out how these microRNAs suppress the queen development such as fresh bodyweight, developmental time, and ovariole number through oral feeding with the corresponding synthetic inhibitors of in vitro reared honey bees.

The new research findings might contribute to the better understanding of how caste-associated microRNAs act in modulating gene expression and developmental differentiation in honey bees.

The PhD degree is completed at the Center for Molecular genetics and system (MGS), Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
