Jeryl Cheng: The role of LysM Receptor-like kinases in Lotus japonicus: Are you my Friend or Foe?

PhD defence, Thursday 18 January 2018. Jeryl Cheng.

Jeryl Cheng

During his PhD studies, Jeryl Cheng focused on characterizing Lysin Motif (LysM)-containing proteins from Lotus japonicus, a legume. Legumes grown under nitrogen-starved conditions will engage in symbiotic nitrogen fixation with rhizobia bacteria. However, to prevent infection by pathogens looking to exploit the symbiotic pathway, legumes must develop ways to discriminate between friend or foe.

Using biochemical and structural tools to help better understand the initial recognition of both symbionts and pathogens, he managed characterized two LysM receptor-like kinases in Lotus japonicus, one involved with perception of rhizobia bacteria and the other with pathogenic fungus.

The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
