Md Mesbah Uddin: Use of genomics can improve female fertility in dairy cattle

PhD defence, Tuesday 17 September 2019, Md Mesbah Uddin

Md Mesbah Uddin

During his PhD studies, Md Mesbah Uddin investigated large-scale genomics data on Nordic Holstein, Danish Jersey, Nordic Red and French Normande dairy cattle to identify fertility associated causal variants. His analyses involved both small and large sequence variants. His research outputs included a catalog of large chromosomal deletions with imputed genotypes on thousands of animals from the three Nordic dairy breeds, and the identification of a candidate lethal mutation in Normande cattle.

Md Mesbah Uddin also performed association mapping and genomic prediction for female fertility using imputed sequence variants. His studies highlighted the importance of large deletions, beside small sequence variants, as predictor for female fertility in dairy cattle.

The new research findings can be used to make mating-decision (to avoid at-risk mating) and to improve accuracy of genomic estimated breeding values in dairy cattle.

The PhD degree was completed at Center for Quantitative Genetics and Genomics (QGG), Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University, DK, and Animal Genetics and Integrative Biology, AgroParisTech/INRA, France.
