PUMPkin gets kidney from beached fin whale

The PUMPkin Centre was lucky to get a piece of the kidney from the dead fin whale that beached itself last week in Vejle Fjord. The kidney will be used for studies of the sodium-potassium pump in Poul Nissen's laboratory. The kidney is very important for the osmotic balance in the body, and an animal as large as the fin whale, which swallow large amounts of seawater, has an extraordinary high expression of the sodium-potassium pump in the kidney tissue. The kidney from the fin whale is therefore a prime candidate for favorable speciments of the sodium-potassium pump for crystallography.
