Hieu Vu Quang: Nanoparticles as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging

PhD defence, Wednesday 22 April 2015. Hieu Vu Quang.

Hieu Vu Quang

Hieu Vu Quang spent the last three years developing nanoparticles as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Nanoparticles enhance the contrast in MRI and thus improve the disease diagnosis, as well as tracking down the labelled cell in real time. His studies focused on two types of nanoparticles: iron oxide nanoparticles, which are used as a negative contrast in 1H MRI images, and fluorinated nanoparticles, which yield a positive contrast with free background in 19F MRI images.

The research findings contribute to new methods for contrast improvement in MRI. These nanoparticles have proved to be able to meet the target: they could be used to target cancer for better diagnosis or to label the cells for real time imaging using MRI.

The PhD degree was completed at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Centre (iNANO), Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
