Jacqueline D. Farrell: Investigating self-incompatibility in perennial ryegrass

During her studies, Jacqueline D. Farrell developed genetic information about perennial ryegrass. In Denmark, perennial ryegrass seed production and export is an important component of the agricultural economy. Perennial ryegrass is an outbreeding species due to a self-incompatibility (SI) system that is genetically regulated by two independent loci, S and Z. Genetic self-incompatibility (GSI) is a prezygotic reproductive process by which the pistil can reject its own pollen. Jacqueline D. Farrell studied the global gene expression in perennial ryegrass to better understand of the mechanisms involved in self-incompatibility.


Jacqueline D. Farrell’s research contributed to the developed a comprehensive annotated reference transcriptome was developed that can aid in determining genetic variation, expression analysis, genome annotation and gene mapping. Jacqueline D. Farrell’s research also contributed to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in self-incompatibility.

The PhD degree was completed at the Flakkebjerg Research Center, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Crop Genetics and Biotechnology Section, Intergrated Genomics Group, Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
