Methylation of DNA cytosine residues is an important epigenetic modification that plays important roles in differentiation and development, as well as in several diseases. Moreover, methylation has been observed to have important implications in modulating gene expression. Recent advances in genomic technologies using next-generation sequencing make it possible to carry out detailed analysis of methylation and transcriptomics data using BS-seq and RNA-seq technologies.

During his PhD studies, Jamal Momeni researched the relationship between DNA methylation and gene expression. In summary, he used high-throughput technologies to study global methylation variation and transcription profiles at genome level. High-resolution DNA methylation maps for two porcine tissues – liver and brain – and the integrated analysis of transcriptome and methylome data have expanded the understanding of DNA methylation patterns at different genomic regions, as well as revealing new features of the complicated association between DNA methylation and gene expression.

The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
