Jeanette Hedegaard Jensen: Gene expression in skeletal musculature affected by unaccustomed physical exercise

News-itemDuring the course of her PhD studies, Jeanette Hedegaard Jensen carried out research into which genes in porcine skeletal musculature have an impact on muscle recovery immediately after unaccustomed physical activity, as well as which genes are important for the satellite cells in the muscles.

She studied the activity of thousands of genes in porcine muscle in the first three hours following unaccustomed physical activity in the form of a single session of running. The activation of skeletal muscle stem cells – also called satellite cells – plays an important role in the repair of damage to the musculature. Such damage can occur as a result of unaccustomed strain on the musculature. Gene expression in active satellite cells was therefore also studied. The research results achieved by Jeanette Hedegaard Jensen contribute to the understanding of which genes are important for the early muscle response to unaccustomed physical activity, as well as which genes are involved in the ability of the satellite cells to repair the skeletal musculature.
