Kathe Thuesen Munk: Sex determination and female development in honey bees

A single gene with an astonishing diversity controls development of honey bee embryos into either males or females through the mechanism complementary sex determination. Kathe has studied how these variations at the molecular level guides sex-specific development of progeny. In addition, studies of how environmental factors influences caste-specific development of female larvae into either sterile workers or reproductive queens has been conducted.

The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
