Pawel Olszewski: Biogenesis of the messenger – insights into formation and quality control of yeast mRNP

Messenger ribonucleoprotein particle (mRNP) consists of messenger RNA (mRNA) decorated with proteins of multiple functions, which give it a compact structure, enable export and ensure proper localization and translation. During his studies, Pawel Olszewski investigated the role of mRNP component, polyadenylated RNA-binding protein, Nab2.

Recently a group under Professor Torben Heick Jensen showed that Nab2 is engaged in the quality control process leading to degradation of improperly formed mRNPs. Pawel’s studies provide further evidence for the role in mRNP surveillance and in addition, suggest a novel role in biogenesis of bulk mRNP in yeast cells.

These new research findings contribute to understanding how mRNP is formed. Moreover, results show that mRNP proteins as Nab2 can possess multiple functions in the biogenesis as well as in the quality control of the particle.

The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University and Department of Molecular Biology ad Microbiology, Tufts University, Boston USA.
