Ramularia leaf spot is a relatively recently discovered fungal disease in barley caused by the Ramularia collo-cygni fungus. The disease has growing significance for the cultivation of barley in Northern Europe, where it leads to diminished yield and reduced harvest quality.

In his PhD project, Rasmus L. collaborated with the Danish company Sejet Planteforædling I/S to study opportunities for refining new types of barley with increased resistance to the fungus.

The results of his PhD project show that there is a potential for refining new types with improved resistance to Ramularia leaf spot. However, the results also indicate that there are areas requiring further studies before it will be possible to control the disease effectively by means of refinement.

The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Science and Technology, Aarhus University. The project was financed by Sejet Planteforædling I/S.
