Steffen Nyegaard: Milk protein as inhibitor of inflammatory conditions – potential in autoinflammatory diseases

During his PhD studies, Steffen Nyegaard investigated proteins from milk and their impact on intestinal homeostasis, as well as their regulatory effect on the inflammatory response. An increasing number of cases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been registered in Western countries. Research has pointed towards dysregulation in the immune system, genetic disposition and environmental factors as important causes of these diseases with subsequent increased inflammation. The consequences of intestinal inflammation often involve lifelong treatment, malnutrition and surgical intervention.

Steffen Nyegaard demonstrated the anti-inflammatory effect of the milk protein lactadherin, and this new knowledge could have important implications in the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as IBD. He also showed how different milk proteins affect the rate of intestinal cell migration and thereby the speed of the healing process.

The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
