Lotte D’Andrea Markert: Topographical signals can control cellular activity

During the course of her PhD studies, Lotte D’Andrea Markert carried out research into how topographic surfaces affect the behaviour of mammalian cells. The organisation of mammalian tissue is carried out in topographical signals that control cellular activity and contribute to the controlled state or development characteristic of healthy organisms.

Lotte D’Andrea Markert studied the way in which systematic variations in the dimensions of geometrically defined microtopographs could be read off in the structural organisation of the cells and activation of biochemical signals. The results of her studies show that topographical signals can be used to tune cellular activity. This emphasises that it is possible to optimise the topography of biomaterials for application in implants or the formation of new tissue.

The PhD degree was completed at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Centre (iNANO), Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
