Jeppe Buur Madsen: Biochemical analysis of enzyme inhibitors

During the course of his PhD studies, Jeppe Buur Madsen carried out research into a type of proteins called serpins. These proteins are enzyme inhibitors and are thereby important in the regulation of enzymes in a number of physiological processes, such as tissue formation and reconstruction, as well as blood coagulation.
Using biochemical methods, Jeppe Buur Madsen studied details of the reaction between the serpin PAI-1 and two particular enzymes. He also studied how the activity of serpins can be regulated by means of different types of artificial molecules. These research results contribute to a more detailed understanding of serpins, and could be used in future work on developing new therapeutic strategies against diseases that occur because of abnormal serpin activity.
The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
