About
As a newly appointed faculty member with teaching responsibilities, you may find it challenging to navigate the local teaching practices at your department. You might have questions such as:
- What characterizes the educational tradition here?
- What is the relationship and approach towards students, and how do students approach their studies?
- What does it mean to be a teacher in this department?
Additionally, there may be practical questions. During our course, we’ll provide you with an understanding of the teaching environment at your department and the student population you’ll be working with.
Intended Learning Outcomes
We aim to inspire and empower new (international) teachers at your department by equipping them with knowledge, tools, and methods for teaching.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Compare the Danish education system and teaching culture with your previous experiences to understand similarities and differences.
- Know where to find relevant rules, guidelines, and expectations that affect teaching practices at AU.
- Consider how cultural differences may influence interactions with students and adjust your teaching accordingly.
- Be familiar with selected teaching strategies and formats relevant to your specific teaching tasks.
- Begin developing a personal approach to teaching and understand how you can contribute at your department.
These outcomes are designed to be achievable within a 15-hour course, focusing on the most essential aspects to provide you with a solid introduction to teaching at a Danish university.
Profile of Participants
This course is for international postdocs interested in taking on teaching responsibilities as part of their professional development. Danish postdocs are also welcome, but some content will focus on cultural differences in the classroom and teaching in English. Danish participants are encouraged to share their experiences and perspectives. No prior teaching experience is required, nor is it necessary to have definite future teaching obligations—just an interest in learning and applying the tools, knowledge, and support provided.
The course will be conducted in English, and participants should be committed to engaging with the content in a safe learning environment.
Technical Information
This is a blended learning course with two half-day meetups at the department and an online asynchronous component. The total estimated workload is 14 hours, and the course is not ECTS-based.
