The programme combined science, communication, and plenty of opportunities for informal conversations. On the first day, we enjoyed scientific presentations and then took to the water for a boat trip on Lille Bælt, where we were lucky enough to spot several marsvin (porpoises) and a seal. Back at the hotel, we enjoyed an evening together including pub quiz before continuing with the scientific programme the following day.
Throughout the retreat, representatives from each of the four groups gave excellent presentations, providing an opportunity to learn more about the diverse research taking place across Plant-PATH. The group leaders also took part in a series of chalk talks, during which it became clear that, while our group leaders are undoubtedly highly skilled scientists, their drawing and spelling skills may require a little more work!
The second day also featured an illuminating workshop on Storytelling for Scientists, led by science communication expert Robin Bonné. The workshop gave us new perspectives and practical tools for communicating our science more effectively, and provided plenty of food for thought about how we share our research with different audiences.
Perhaps one of the best things about the retreat was simply the opportunity to spend time together. Over the two days, we learned a great deal about each other's research, interests and backgrounds. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to making our first annual retreat such a success.
