Sigrid Thirup Larsen: Understanding the Regulatory Mechanism of a Calcium Transporter
PhD defence, Monday 20 January 2020. Sigrid Thirup Larsen.
During her Ph.D. studies, Sigrid Thirup Larsen researched the regulatory mechanism of the Plasma membrane calcium ATPase, a protein that transports calcium. Located in the plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells the plasma membrane calcium ATPase transport calcium across the membrane and out of the cell against a 20.000 fold steep calcium gradient. The protein is important for calcium signaling, which control processes such as muscle contractions, learning and memory. Sigrid Thirup Larsen has studied the plasma membrane calcium ATPase, ACA8 from the plant Arabidobsis thaliana as well as the human plasma membrane calcium ATPases. The goal has been to obtain a deeper understanding of the regulatory mechanisms that govern calcium transport.
The research has led to a better understanding of how the plasma membrane calcium ATPases are regulated and has increased our current knowledge of their role in the very intricate system of calcium signaling.
The PhD degree was completed at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO), Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
