During her PhD studies, Amalie Carnbring Bonde researched the proteins in the human blood coagulation system. Normal blood flow is maintained by pro- and anti-coagulant pathways and is vital to life, as blood transports nutrients and oxygen to the cells, and transports waste products away from the cells. Upon damage of the tissue, the coagulation system triggers a downstream cascade of coagulation protease activation steps which eventually leads to the formation of a blood clot to stop the bleeding. Amalie Carnbring Bonde studied how one of the proteins in the coagulation system, the coagulation protease called Factor X, is regulated to maintain normal blood flow.

The new research findings contribute to the understanding of how Factor X is regulated during coagulation, which potentially can improve treatment opportunities for patients with suffering from the genetic bleeding disorder Hemophilia.

The PhD study was completed in collaboration with Novo Nordisk A/S and Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University.
